Default Upper tensioner replacement, pleasent suprise

DID THE TIE RAP VERSION AND THINGS WENT WELL ON PASSENGERS SIDE.
DRIVERS SIDE HAD TO CHANGE CAM ROTATION SO IT WOULD RELEASE, HAD TO BUTTON BACK UP AND BUMP START TO CHANGE WERE CAM WAS MORE EQUAL PRESSURE FRONT TO BACK.

Very pleasant surprise on inspection as the tensioners were tan 2nd generation. Second surprise was red RTV on front chain cover which indicates there has been work done on main cam chains, tensioners and updated also.

Makes one breath easier as near 99k on odometer and the lower tensioners and guides have been updated.

Now for just driving and enjoying this recent purchase and my second Jaguar XJ.

To others considering this venture is is fairly easy, just take your time and do it right.

Ok ... what is the significance of the "tan 2nd generation"? And what is "RVP"? And this relates to what model year?

Default tan tensioners

!. The tan tensioners are what they call 2nd generation replacements.

This meant someone has updated the original tensioners that were more prone to break. The ones I took out were in good shape no cracking or shown wear.

2. I used wrong id info the product is RTV is what I meant to say.

By seeing it used on front covers it is an indication that the front cam cover has been removed and RTV was used to help seal the gasket.

I am thinking the lower tensioners and guides have been updated when the uppers were done.

That gives me ease of mind in that the originals that cracked over time have been replaced with newer improved product.

What color are the original parts? In other words if I see ________ they are original.

Thank you

Pics are of an AJ27 4.0 V8 engine as fitted to X308 XJ8/XJRs, but the same engine was used in the XK8 series.

You may not realize you are in the XJ8 (X308) section of the forum, not the XK8 (X100) section?

Thanks, I had responded to another thread just looking for more info after I was quoted like $1000.00 to inspect the tensioners on my XK8. I may be wrong but it "seems" there is less talk about the XK8 2001 tensioners than other models and older models. I lost track of the section momentarily. Sorry but thank you.

Mark,

Replacing the timing chain tensioners is a relatively involved task, kits can be purchased from various sources but quality varies and this kit from Christopher's Foreign Car Parts is one favored by many on the forum.
https://christophersforeigncarparts....ing-in-one-box

Different kits are available for different years due to slight changes in design of the engines during the 1997-2003 production years.

The kits includes everything you need, 2 upper tensioners, 2 lower tensioners, 4 lower guides, plus all the gaskets and seals needed to do the job. Special tools are also needed for camshaft/crankshaft alignment. If broken tensioner parts are found during disassembly (very likely) it is recommended that the oil pan is removed for cleaning to prevent debris from damaging the engine.

Costs at repair shops are usually around $2,500-$3,000, or more, if you do the work yourself it can be done for around $500-$600. (tensioners/guides gaskets, oil, anti-freeze, special tools). It is recommended that the thermostat and water-pump are replaced at the same time, an additional $100+

.
