Default Used or rebuilt engine?

I posted earlier about the dilemma of whether to replace head gaskets or replace engine. Since replacing head gaskets is well above my pay grade (and that of my local utilitarian mechanic), and since my local Jag guys have told me that it would cost as much for them to replace the gaskets as to replace the engine, I am now looking at replacement engine options.

Rebuilt engines are available at $6,500 plus shipping but that would hammer my budget. Used engines with reasonable (<100k) miles seem to be available for around $2,500.

What are my risks in purchasing a used engine? How can I be sure I am getting the exactly correct model for my 2001 XJ8? What do I need to be sure is included with the engine?

I need some sage advice before wading into this investment. Thanks for any wise words!

Ideally you want one made after 2001, August 13, Midnight onward (From Engine (0108130000) to avoid the Nikasil era.

See above to avoid the problematic timing tensioners.

+1 to KC's suggestion....and I'd contact a site sponsor like Coventry West. They get cars in all the time (I get the notifications) that they are scrapping out. So they can tell you all the info and if they drove it in, ...they may even be able to start it for you? They're real easy to deal and are in Eastern GA.
Another avenue is Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market, I've gotten a couple items on there in excellent condition and somewhat cheaper than local yards.
