Default What oil to use on a 1999 XJ8

I bought my 1999 XJ8 with 75k miles in February. I took it to a jiffy lube for a oil change This month in June. They put 7 quarts of Mobil synthetic oil 5w30. I am concerned if the oil is too thin for this type of car or even Summer. Does anyone have an answer? I made the oil change last weekend. IF it is the wrong one they gave me i will take my car back for a refund or a oil change again. I am concerned cus yesterday when I turned on the engine it sounded like it had no oil. a bit of grind or flopping sound but the oil is full. :/

5W30 is the factory recommended weight.

Couldn't be described as a 'rattle' by any chance?

See tensioners.

The words "upper cam chain tensioners" come to mind here. You need to check where the noise is coming from. As a '99 car, you will have the plastic-bodied upper tensioners, and these fail in a big way, causing the engine to be damaged. Replace them immediately !! (unless you know they have been done, and the noise is coming from elsewhere).

Ok so 5w30 ia correct then. I will not complain if this is the case. They did charge me 16 bucks for the 2 quarts extra though. Wonder if it is better to bring it to a none jiffy lube place and to a regular mechanic. Total was 73 bucks including a free hand car wash.

Using synthetics on cars that do not require them (like Jaguars) is a complete waste of money unless the extended change interval is taken advantage of.

Having said that. no harm was done by using them, except to your wallet.

$73 bucks...where did I go wrong?...I only charge my customers $50 bucks....how can I get in some of this action?......For an extra $23 bucks, I could have taken my wife to McDonalds last saturday night....but wait, I'm not washing them....OK, that makes more sense now...

Here's what my Jaguar mech recommended for me..just had my first oil change for it since bought. Yes, it was an $80 oil change.

Total Quartz 9000

Says it's big in Europe with Mercedes and BMW cars

I run motorcraft 10w30. Its semi-synthetic and we have a 3000 mile interval.

That seems right to me. 'Free' hand washes cost around $23 here too.

Don't agree with Mikey, A top quality and trusted Uk specialist say's use the 5w 30 fully synthetic oil. Becuase these engines are designed to a fine tolerance and which include the use of such oil. From the Jaguar Enthusiats Mag.

Because of my own experience, I can't pass the chance to say - Check Out The Tensioners in Your XJ!!!!!!

One of mine broke at 77,000 starting it up in the drive way and I am now in the middle of pulling the heads to repair the valve damage.

I wish I had taken the issue more seriously, believe me.
