I've also heard the 03 engine had the bugs worked out of it. As far as the trans goes it's a ZF 5HP24 and is somewhat controversial. FWIW, mine has 157,000 miles on it and has never been opened. Then again I don't drive like a madman and I know the previous owner was pretty conservative too.

That said the A-Drum in the trans is it's weakness so when I found a trans with only 50 K on it I grabbed it and put it in the garage just in case.

My suggestion is to drive it when it's stone cold. Don't even let the car warm up. If it's holding first gear to long plan on trans work.

There is quite a debate on whether to change the fluid or not. Mine has the original fluid.

 

Sinister 1, Thanks for your reply. I also have an 03(VDP) that is very well taken care of. Has 61k but you got me thinking about a spare tranny.
