Default What's the Biggest Ripoff Part on an X308?

We know OEM parts for our cars are expensive, but so far I find the battery clamp/hold down to be the most egregious example at just over $95...

BATTERY HOLD DOWN | Genuine Jaguar | GNB3542AB

Mine was missing and the hack for securing the battery performed by the previous owner was a joke. I just ended up making my own.

What's your most ridiculous example of $$$ parts?

Lower front ball joints. $1000 each, but they come with a complimentary lower wishbone :P

And now you know why nobody buys parts through their dealer. Lucky there are so many great parts places out there that sell OE parts (original genuine parts, but direct from the manufacturer, so you avoid Jaguar clipping the ticket and doubling the price)

(Delivered in my best Strother Martin/Cool Hand Luke voice)
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"

Y'see, you're supposed to be proud of the fact that a $10 part costs ten times that much for your ride.
Trumpet it far and wide.
'cause that makes you special!

Sigh .... you just don't get it, do you?
tsk tsk

In its defense, I think the battery hold down clamp is marvelouslly sturdy. Much
better than some that I have seen.

Gotta' wonder how someone loses a battery hold down clamp though.

Here a great one! For an XK8 rather than a XJ8 but shockingly laughable.
Jaguar sell a kit to replace TPS wires with Gold connectors rather than the tin (or Zinc) - to match the Gold insert. I ordered one and when it arrived I couldn't believe my eyes!

The cost was $65 and for that you got .............. wait for it ............

a three inch long piece of 20 gauge wire with a gold delphi female connector on the end......... Just the one! To complete the job I would have needed to buy three more!

Bought 25 Gold connectors from Wayline for $9 - the wire was literally priceless.

Lesson: Research, research, research before ordering.

I like to compare the XJ8 with my XJ-S.

Parts are available for both from Jaguar still. I needed two battery clamps... €4,95/piece and the winged nuts were something like €0,30/piece. Delivered over night... I bought all the hoses, original, for the V12 (something like 18 heater hoses!) for €91. The 2 hoses on the V8 cost together half of that price plus the ones in the V and co...

I bought O2 sensors for less than $100 (Denso or Bosch I think) after dealer quoted me $1000 each for OE sensors.

I'm trying to figure out what a "Damper-suspe" is. Dealer says I need 4 of them, $500 each. Maybe the shocks. Car has CATS suspension which I know is expensive.

Key FOB, $249.00. Programing $149.00.

or

OEM brand new key FOB $60, including shipping.....instructions on programing free. Time to program key FOB, including one read through of instructions and actual programing, door open to door close, less than 45 seconds.

Sweet deal to charge $149.00 labor and have to only pay your mechanic for one minutes work!

Dealer: Wiper Motor = Cool Thou (tax inc.). Ebay used but fine = $39 no tax free shipping.

Dealer: 24 inch drinking straw (a.k.a coolant bleed hose) = $43. Ebay, around the same price (new, of course) - no bargains there.

Lets not forget the R Performance BBS wheels...

Actually, now that I think about it, the R performance brake upgrade is ridiculous. By the time I add Brembo disks and pads to the callipers I have already, I'm looking at about the same price as the BBS Detroit wheels I just bought, roughly NZ$3000 (US$2300)

List price for ski slope: $1500.
