Wheeze on shift? '03 XJ8
Howdy everyone. First post and didn't see a link to introduce myself. So killing 2 birds here. Have an '03 XJ8, 4.0 not supercharged. Sitting now right at 150K miles. Love that car, and will keep it until the wheels fall of it, or me, whichever is first. Old fart, retired computer coder and trainer. Make a lot of sawdust and bend a lot of nails now.
When cold, on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, I get a wheeze noise. As it warms up, the noise diminishes. This started right when I had the trans fluid replaced about 30K miles ago. I can't tell if its from up in the nose or from the transmission. As the trans fluid has aged, the noise is gradually less and less at every temp level. Shifts are snug and smooth - no lag, no balking.
My tech thinks it's cam chain tensioner. But last year he thought it was in the transmission. Heck, it may be both... There is a high pitched whine, almost a whistle, at times, from well up front, but it's not consistent. This noise is consistent in pitch with chain lobes whizzing past a spot. It does vary as the shift progresses, and stops when the shift is done. Best i can say is it sounds like ZZZZEEEWWW. The shift is snug, no slippage, no indication the trans is about to break (I know what that sounds and feels like, my '99 did it! - it;s why I have this 03!).
Second issue - perhaps related - going uphill in 5th, at around 1500-1800 RPM (45-ish MPH), there is a grnn-groan - grnnn-groan - grnn-groan - really low pitched almost like it has bad indigestion. Downshift to 4th and it diminishes. Speed up past 50 and it disappears.
There are apparently no codes being thrown. So no clues there!
Any thought y'all might have on either of these issues I'd really appreciate hearing about it. I'd like to mend the most likely issue first, then see if the other noise(s) have gone away. Money as an old retard, I mean retired, gent is always an issue.
