Default Would you install engine upgrades on your XJ8?

Why or why not? By upgrades I mean something like a turbocharger or FlexFuel. Can the car handle such upgrades?

The tranny for the supercharged engine in the x308 is more robust than the normally aspirated engine
for a reason. Too much stress on the NA tranny and you can count on spending some real money.

Personally, I prefer to keep the Duchess as she came dressed for the party.

I've got a XJR, it'll probably get a larger bottom pulley when the timing chains etc are replaced.

Have you already solved the many problems described that you think about something like this? ;-)

Eric, the MB transmission will bolt right in place. The problem is the hardware and software compatibility. You’d have to go standalone for the engine, transmission & ABS. Rewiring would also be needed along with ditching the instrument pack in place of a digital screen. Not even remotely worth all the time and money you’d spend. Buying an XJR is realistically the only answer unless you feel like taking on a huge project.

Considering these cars will throw codes if anything is not reading correctly from the sensors to the ECU, I am not inclined to do any modifications that would cause a problem. It's hard enough just to keep them running and not having CEL codes!

I am of the opinion that Jaguar already made the upgrades called the XJR. (sedans are CHEAP enough so why not buy one that already has 'forced-induction'?)

I've got to throw in my "two-cents-worth of opinion" on this thread; and you know what is said about opinions ...

First of all, there's an unbelievable amount of knowledge and advice in these forums to help with any and all problems that might be encountered. Whether you're a "hot-rodder" a "concourse" enthusiast, or just want to keep your car running, it's all here.

Second, these cars, the X308 series, are anywhere from 20 to 25 years old. OEM parts are getting harder to find, and some aftermarket parts just don't measure up to the original quality. You'll find the parts to avoid as you read through some of the threads on different topics. For example, motor mounts and ignition coils; aftermarket for the mounts and OEM for the coils. You get to make those calls based on what is mentioned in the threads.

As for me, I'm the hot-rodder type, and like Brandon says above, if you're wanting a hot rod, start with an XJR. As soon as mine was out of warranty, I started doing the upgrades, haven't stopped, and I'm in the process of collecting parts to do my next project. That will be having the heads rebuilt with some performance enhancements, maybe a set of headers (if BadCat will still make them), add on to the exhaust system (already have downpipes with 200 cell cats), and hopefully an Avos twin screw supercharger kit, if he decides to do another run that he's been alluding to for almost seven years.

For Eric, you're going to be somewhat limited in what you can (legally) do since you're in CA, unless you do bolt-on stuff that can easily be replaced with the OEM stuff for the emissions inspection. A good start would be the Mina Gallery Intake (that's a link to the website). It will help your NA car somewhat. But, a savvy emissions inspection station will tell you that it's not legal even though it operates just like the OEM tube; it's just a little bigger for more airflow and made out of aluminum instead of plastic. I don't know what else can be done to an NA engine, but I'm sure there are some threads within this forum can you can peruse.

And, yes (for all those that kind of know me) the mention of the TS kit is to ping Avos to see if he's any closer to doing another batch.

Mark is correct, we have the entire palette of Jaguar owners here. We have those who will go to great lengths
for a few extra ponies, as well as those who maintain that keeping the "Cats" stock is the only way to go. We
also have many who fall in between those extremes who have particular ideas about what is or is not right for
their particular situation. In earlier times, I remember spending three times what the cars were worth on a SS Camaro
and a SS Chevelle on such things as 13.5:1 pistons, ported and polished heads, bored blocks, triple angle valve jobs,
solid lifters cams, intakes, carbs, headers, transmissions and exhaust systems. Was it fun? YES! Was it worth it?
Only to me. Would I do it again? Probably not. Jaguars are sophisticated cars with elegance and already abundant
as far as power is concerned.

out of boredom been browsing spares for xj8 today and some curiosity popped up in front, namely chip tuning, i'm highly suspicious of the thing that says adds 30% hp just by plugging onto obd port, but i followed the lead and it looks like quite some people swear by it, they claim they tested their cars on dyno and it works, others stated people in hobby racing communities use them non stop. Well, i'm still doubting this thing but someone may chime in and it is not expensive if you willing to be lab rat

They do make real electric superchargers that cost significant $. 48 volt battery required.

Yeah, quick crude calc, 4l x 7000rpm = 28m3/min that would give boost at low rev and no at red line
super hyper electric leaf blower i have saved for purchase this autumn moves 11m3/min
so motorcarman is right 3x leafblowers are necessary
