Default XJ300 Sovereign or XJ308?

(I originally posted this on the X300 page but thought I might also post it on the X308 page just to get a balanced set of opinions from X308 owners too).

Hello to all you Jaguar enthusiasts! So I'm writing to get some thoughts on possibly buying a Jaguar Sovereign XJ6 in the X300 model. I spent some time looking at the X308 and X350 and found them very 'plastic' in comparison. They just didn't have the same elegance to them, and the Sovereign alloys on the X300 are just so incredibly elegant. I was also advised that the 4 litre six cylinder engine is incredibly reliable and longstanding, and that the X300 was known for its reliability. I like the Sovereign for its extras. I am just trying to look for one with a long wheelbase as they are quite cramped in the standard wheelbase, and also one in midnight blue! Such a stunning colour.

I have also been looking at a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow as a second option. Obviously there is a price premium on these cars over an XJ6 but I also like them a lot. Has anyone had both of these cars that they can compare them? And what are people's thoughts on buying an X300? The best one to buy or are there benefits to an X308, despite the fact I find them 'cheaper' looking?

J.

Hi J.

I am a fond admirer of the X300/X308, and I know both well. I present own a X308 4.0 l, and for what it is worth I would take the X308 V8 any day. Find a decent X308 with history and it will be as reliable as the X300. The tensioners and Nicasil problem will be sorted out. I think there is a big difference between the 3.2 and 4.0, and I would definately go for the latter. The V8 is so much more refined, and I also think the X308 dash is better and more modern looking, but that is always down to taste.

Find a couple of objects and try for yourself. Happy hunting.

I think both cars have their little odds, but have enough character to appreciate.
Both have their little sweets, as well as their issues, but those can be prevented or are probably done already.
If you want to fork those costs is an other matter, but I did for my x308 and that car is not going to go as long as I live.
Whichever you choose, go for a good one, the extra price you might pay is the easiest to earn back, I guarantee you.
