XJ8 Auto Lights feature fail
could be something to do with the sensor which is that big apparatus near the rear view mirror that is glued onto the windscreen. Have you had your windscreen replaced. If that isn't the problem I suppose there could be some type of problem with the wiring somewhere

Do the side lights work?
It could be a wire broken loose pn the stalk, I had no auto lights and found two wires off the little board they were supposed to be fixed to, I luckily had a spare so swapped them. You have to disconnect battery and leave for 10 mins, then remove the airbag from the wheel, , then look for the wires and their connections to the column. They can be easily re-soldered back on.
On the back of the rear view mirror there is a "control dial" to adjust the sensitiveness of the auto light switch. Its a black round pin-like thing.
Maybe the electronics inside is slightly corroded and it helps to turn it a few times...
