XJ8 Engine warning light

I have a 2002 XJ8 with 35K miles. This morning the amber engine warning light came on with a message saying gas cap not on correct or words to that effect. Gas cap was checked and fitted correctly. Message has now gone but the warning light is still on all the time. Before I take to the dealer for diagnostic, any suggestions please?

You have an evap leak of some sort. Possible gas cap seal. Could also be I-ring at carbon canistor or canister close valve.
Need to smoke test it to be sure.

if you get it tested and there is no leak then you need a gas tank pressure sensor.. sometimes they go out of wack .. and they think there is a leak.. and start setting fake codes.. and there like $350
