XJ8 intermittent no crank

Once every few weeks my 2000 3.2L xj8 will not crank. At the same time the instrument lights all go out just as if the battery is disconnected. I turn the ignition key off and on and the cat springs to life. Also my scan tool shows P1649 - flash memory -FCCP monitoring malfunction. I dont know if this is related. I have checked battery terminals, connections on the false fire wall and earths. Could this be intermittent key transponder coil or ignition switch. Thanks for any advise.

I have had a similar problem from time to time. I don't recall what happens to the panel lights though. I've found that if I turn the key a bit harder - just a bit more effort in the starting position, the car will start. I suspect I will need to replace the ignition switch someday.
Check where the battery cable comes into the engine bay on the passengers side. You will have to pull up the plastic cover on that side. There is a terminal, make sure its tight on both sides and there is no corrosion, melted wire.
