I am new to the forum and to X308’s

Looking to pickup an XJ8 Sport and have a couple of questions.

From the factory what was the factory grill, mesh or slats, chrome or painted?

Mirrors - chrome or painted?

Would I be right that a 2002 model benefits from metal tensioners and non nicasil cylinder linings.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a buyers guides or brochure that would be great!

Hi Ronnie,

You can prompt the "How To" link in my signature and it'll take you to the Sticky at the top of this forum for things to look for when buying a X308. Same goes for any TSB's in my sig once you find the car you want. Also, if you could put your location in your Settings & Options under User CP just above your name in the task bar. This way we can understand any issues you may have for the conditions your in. Be sure to put more than just a town, this is a world wide forum. Plus, for example, there was a member selling his 2001 XJR for a great price here in Central Florida, we could do some finger pointing to help.

For your specs, a simple Bing or Google search should return a Car and Driver article or two for options and such (https://www.bing.com/search?q=2002+J...2EB16B140416E0). The options changed almost yearly, whereas chrome mirror covers were only available on the Vanden Plas, the next on SC models also. Same goes for the mesh and slat grills along with wheel combos. It comes down to whether your buying a base model or SC.

As for tensioners, you are correct, upgraded metal tensioners are in the 02's and Nikasil was removed mid 2000.

Thank you for the response, very helpful. OK- so the chrome mirror covers and mesh grill is not standard on a UK Sport?

Is it a big job to change black window surrounds to chrome polished if desired?

I am sorry, I cannot answer anything about the UK models. You can try posting in the regional section from the drop down top left...Forums, ..General Jag Forums, ..Regional

A mesh grill is not hard to get and put in, in any case. As for the window surrounds, I believe we call those gutter trim, if we're talking about the same thing. I recall a couple of posts on it from awhile back from folks replacing damaged ones or removing it to paint the car.
