Default XJ8 VP pulley problem

My serpentine shredded today. I looked at the pulleys and one is completely missing next to crank shaft pulley. Does anyone have a diagram of the pulleys? And do I need to replace my tensioner? Please help

Chris,
Sorry I don't have a diagram for you, but if you download the JTIS manual from Christos at the top of the forum, you will find one in the Powertrain, Accessory Drive section. There are two pulleys near the crank pulley. I assume the one you are missing is the idler on the tensioner itself, not the idler on the left side (looking from the front) near the alternator. I have read that the belt tensioners come as a unit only, but have never had your problem, so can not confirm. I am wondering if someone turned the idler bolt in a clockwise direction and loosened the bolt enough for it to back out all the way & drop off. The tensioner idler pulley has left hand threads.

At any rate, changing the tensioner assembly is an easy task. It simply bolts on with a single bolt. If you end up with a new one, it torques to 38-48 Nm. Make sure you don't turn the bolt on the idler pulley as noted above. It is not the mounting bolt. The tensioner mounts to the engine with a normal right hand thread.

If you are talking about the idler near the alternator, not the tensioner, it bolts on to a torque of 53-69 Nm. (right hand thread)

Did you require a new tensioner?

Default 1999 xj8 engine idler pulley - fell off with picture

I had to add on to this thread because this was funny...sort of.

So last weekend I'm driving home - a 130 mile trip at around midnight - going down Interstate 95. I have my radio blasting so I didn't hear anything from the engine compartment.

I arrive home and pull into the garage, turn off radio, and now I'm hearing a noise like the radiator fan has lost a blade or something - a rattling/clanking!

So I turn off the engine immediately and open the hood, can't see anything with the overhead lights.

The next morning, armed with a flashlight, I discover this:

So I consider myself lucky that this didn't turn into an "event" on the highway in the middle of the night - as my serpentine belt was riding over just the inner bearing of the Idler Pulley (shown above) held in place with the bolt - yikes!

The serpentine belt didn't suffer too much damage, but there were WEAR marks, so that's being replaced with the spare I keep in my trunk.

The box shows my $20 replacement from the local auto parts shop - a new, perfectly fitting DAYCO "No Slack" Engine Idler Pulley, Part Number 89016.
