hi im new here ive got a 2000 xjr just brought the car it had sat for about a year. i picked it up serviced it got it running and put it thru a mot first time no problem then after about a day of use the red light on the gear shift started staying on and when it was on nothing would work and a clicking noise from the steering column then the light would go off and all was fine now it is on permanently car is on my drive wont come out of park all 4 windows down i am screwed any one had the same problem or has any ideas hellllpppp

 

Do a search for J-gate shifter repair, there are 3 threads I know of that relate to this from years past.

 

Ditto above. To get you quickly back in action. 1. Unscrew the plastic cap which is next to the shift gate. It looks like an asterisk "*". 2. Stick your key or screw driver into the hole and push down till you feel a click. 3. While holding down the key, shift to neutral with foot on brake. 4. Pull key out of hole and start engine. 5. Shift to drive and drive away.

By doing this, you just bypassed the steering wheel / shift lock. You may need to take this mechanism out and lubricate it so you don't get into this situation again.

It happens with older cars lacking lube. Not a big deal.
