Default For XJR owners

I'm looking to get some XJR tips for my exhaust on my Vanden Plas. Anybody know a good place to find them (besides the dealer) or a good substitute that looks stock? Also, what is the diameter of the stock XJR tip?
I found this in ebay, seems to be the only tip available under jaguar, although it is not an original part: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170633987361...#ht_2530wt_944

Is it the right size to look factory?

Thanks for the replies and enjoy the ride

I have a set of rear silincers off my XJR-100 sitting in the garage. Replaced them with the Mina SS units. They're yours for the shipping cost.

cars for dummies-by silencers do you mean the chrome finishers that bolt on to the exhaust? If so, I'm very interested. Where do you live? I'm in South Carolina. How could I pay you? You can message me if your offer still stands. Thanks so much for the reply...

This would be more along the lines of "Brit car terms for the newbe ..."

Slincer = muffler
Boot = trunk
Bonnet = hood

and so on ...

The rear silincer(s) are easy to remove; they connect to the exhaust pipe just forward of the wheel, then there's a bracket near the tail pipe that needs to be taken down. When you have those two undone, just wiggle it around till it slides off of the forward pipe. You would have to do this to replace the tips, too.

Yes, the offer still stands; they're going in the recycle bin, if you don't want them. I'll try to clean them up and post a picture over the weekend. I live in the Sacramento, CA, area, so packing and shipping would probably be about $75; just guessing on that.

oh, i see. I thought you could just unbolt the tips from the tailpipe, silly me. Do your silencers have the chrome tips still on them? Or do I still need to find those in addition to the silencers? This is starting to sound like a bigger project than I thought....

Yes, the chrome tips are there. I took some pics with my fancy phone, but now my computer won't recognize the phone as a disc drive. I'll try again later today.

No, the British 'bonnet' is indeed the US 'hood' but the British 'hood' is the US convertible top. So when your dash says 'Hood Open' you shouldn't start working on the bonnet.

A question - Will the XJR rear silencers fit the std XJ8 exhaust pipe?
I'm not sure if the exhaust diameter of the middle section of the XJR is the same as the XJ8 one.

I could do a measurement of the XJ8 exhaust and post the diameter.
Could someone do the same on an XJR?

Cheers,

David

Thanks, Richard; I probably knew that term when I was driving a '65 MGB, but that was 30 years ago!

David - I'll try to do some measurements this afternoon when I get home from work. But, that will be around 10pm your time!

Mark,

I just measured the exhaust diameter on my 99 XJ8.
At the end of the middle section (right where it enters the rear silencer) it is roughly 2 Inch in diameter (about 51 Millimeters).

If it is the same with the XJR then the supercharger rear silencers are a right bolt-on-upgrade for the std XJ8s.

Cheers,

David

I get the same measurement, so it appears to be a fit !! I also figured out why I couldn't get my computer to recognize the fancy phone as a disc drive (operator error).

So, here are the pics ...

Cool!
Thanks for the measurements!
Now I only have to locate some cheap XJR silencers ...
(I guess you won't do ship them to Germany?)
Cheers,

David

David,

I'll ship them anywhere, trusting that the recipient will send a check after I send a pdf of the invoice. But, I would think that you could find a set there for less cost than the shipping from here.

Unfortuneately, you're number 3 on the "I'll take that" list, with the originator of this thread at 1.

Mark, just kidding, but thanks for the offer !

I already adapted some XJR Chrome Exhaust Tips to fit my std XJ8 rear muffler last Year.
(Just a piece of steel pipe and some welding needed.)

Cheers,

David

I should have known !! That's twice that I've fallen for wry jokes on this thread alone !! But, I have a good excuse; I've been rebuilding my front suspension for the last week. All I have left to do is mount one side of brakes, check to see that I didn't forget to torque something, then put it on the ground and torque the bushings. Then I have to drive down to San Francisco and help a buddy remove his SC and lower pulley for mods.

So, I've been in a kind of serious state of mind lately while trying to get this done. (And, I had to replace the fuel pumps last month.) But don't worry, I'll get over it soon ...

hispeed42,
I guess I kind of asked this question already, but are you sure the tips don't unbolt from the silencer? On my Vanden there is a bolt on the underside of the chrome tip that seems to hold it on the tailpipe. It would be less of a hassle for you to trek them to the shipping store, as well as be a shipping cost benefit to moi. Although, I suppose your car could be different that mine, or mine doesn't do at all what I think it does. Maybe I'll try to take it off this afternoon, let me know if you want pictures. Thanks for the continued interest in this thread....

Mine appears to have a pop-rivet, but it could be something else. As I said in the above post, I've got a full day in front of me (just taking a little break right now as it's cold in the garage), but I'll take a closer look; hopefully tomorrow.

The XJR tips will NOT fit the XJ8 silencers! (Been there done that.)
The diameter of the pipe that comes from the rear silencer and sticks out of under the bumper is different!
XJR -> big pipe
XJ8 -> small pipe

In my case I modified both rear mufflers to fit the XJR chrome tips.
I can assure you that it will definitely be easier to change 2 rear silencers as they are a right bolt-on-fit as we learned in this thread.

Cheers,

David
