For XJR owners
thanks for the replies. hispeed, I know beggars can't be choosers, but how may miles did your car have on it before you switched to the mina system? The only reason I am hesitant on your offer for the silencers are that mine are in great condition, the cars has 60 some odd thousand on it and has been a southern car all it's life. This is why I am interested in mostly just the tips. I think I would be more apt to modify my silencers to fit the XJR tips, but maybe you could change my mind. Would you be willing to seperate the tips from the silencers? Also, could you (if you get a chance) just measure the diameter of the tip for me? Im interested to see how much bigger it is than the XJ8 tip. I appreciate you doing this for a perfect stranger, although we have a common interest! Thanks so much for everything...
Great thread. Thanks to Hispeed for all the, er, cooperation? Lol we are putting him through the paces I guess (sorry)! And its much appreciated.
David, interesting information too... I think your tips look very good as well.

Okay,
off eBay UK I got myself a pair of used XJR chrome tips for 40 GBP.
Meanwhile I found them NEW from britishparts.co.uk for less than 25GBP/each!
(The chrome tips (XJ & XJR) just slide on the end of the exhaust pipe and are secured with a little allen/hexagon bolt underneath.)
Then I got myself a pair of exhaust reducing adapter pipes.
You need the right size of course.
1. Outside diameter of the XJ8 rearmost pipe = Inner diameter of adapter's small side ~51 Millimeters
2. Inner diameter of XJR chrome tips = Outer diameter of adapters large side ~ 59 Millimeters
Now there's a little craftmanship envolved ...
On the smaller end of your adapter pipe put a little bore a few Centimeters from the end.
Get yourself a nut, place it over the bore and weld it to the adapter.
Sticking a screw into the nut you create a solid fastener that will hold the adapter to your exhaust.
Slide the XJR chrome tip onto the adapter and secure it with it's hex nut.
Slide the adapter (with chrome tip attached) onto your exhaust pipe.
Align it properly and secure it with the little screw.
Voilà - XJR tips on any standard XJ8.

This is EXACTLY what I said the whole time.
Come on 9698XJ, there's some fellow member (Marc) here, who offers a full set of XJR rear silencers in good condition for FREE
Over here Marc's set of silencers would have been long gone (or better they would already drive around - on another Jaguar)!
What is so scary about changing a rear muffler?
One bracket, one clamp, a hard pull on the old one and off it is...
Even a mechanic would charge you less for that job than you would have to pay for a set of chrome tips.

@DavidN... yeah, your setup looks mint, but it sounds like a hell of a lot of work! I park my car in a parking lot at night, and I'm happy to take on a small project like that (I'll ask someone to use their garage!) becuase it would be fun! And I hope I can get hold of those silencers, I really want them too.
My car is also a "Sport" (rare in the USA for some reason) and I would like to have those bigger, beefier looking tips. Plus, I can say, "They're from an XJR-100". That's X308 folklore! I am a member of the plebeian "normally aspirated" club, not the Mount Olympus of the XJR-100
lol!

Read through this thread twice LMAO ...
Yes, there is a little allen screw holding the tip to the pipe. The pipe from the silencer to the tip is the size that David said. The inlet pipe is also what David said. The one tip that I've looked at has some small scratches on the bottom; but you can't see them in the pic that I posted. I'm sure that they would shine up really pretty. I don't recall the mileage on the car when I took these off; I don't even recall when I did it. I think that it may of been the summer of '05. I bought the car used in August of '04 with 33k miles on the clock. I lived in DC at the time and had no garage, so it got snowed on for a winter. Moved out here to Sacramento in June of '06 and it's been garaged since. And so have the silencers ...
From what I know about the history of the car leads me to believe that it had a "checkered past." It was originally purchased in Miami, then sold at auction. Whoever the second owner was drove it to Chicago and traded it in on a Land Rover. These two transactions were within a month of each other. When I took possesion, it had mis-matched tires, the front brakes shimmied like hell (they're the big Brembos), and there was a gouge in one of the wheel spokes that looked like it was the size of a 9mm bullet. So, sombody had driven it the way it was supposed to be driven! I got everything fixed and it's been my daily driver ever since.
Anyway, I'll have to soak those little allen screws in WD40 to see if I can get them loose ...
