Default Getting a key and fob for abandoned XJR

G'day team

Take a look at the attached pic. I am no XJR officianado but I' m pretty sure this is a 1997/1998? XJR.

I love my 2000 XKR convertible and so , a mate told me about this XJR that appeared to have been abandoned not too far from where I work and near another one of his mates homes.
IT's all locked up and handbrake on etc , etc.
He thought it would serve as a perfect set of mechanical spares for my XKR.
It had diplomatic plates on it and had sat for 2-3 years.
Council whacked the green sticker on it 1 month ago advising that if it wasn't moved , it would be towed.
That month having expired , the local council have had it collected by their towing contractor yesterday.
Long story short apparently we have to wait another year for the Previous owner to claim it and then it goes up for sale or disposal.
That in itself could be a painful process.
So to cut to the chase, it would seem that there will not be any keys available for it.
Is it possible , with the VIN , to get a new set of keys and a fob for it?

Pete

I just took my FOB apart to clean due to delayed function, to my surprise it had 2 batteries stacked on top of one another(a first in multi-308 ventures lol). So now it's dead in the water after re-assembling, I'm assuming it must be programmed again once the batteries have been removed, oh the joy lol.

With my last 308 seems I remember a website that sold used FOBs already programmed & ready to go, wish I could recall that site.

Not to detract from OP, but I had to have a mini 4 am rant as I tinker about lol.

It is not hard to program a fob, new or used to a 308.

There are plenty of threads on here about it.

Basically, off the top of my head, you pull the high beam flash, hold it on, put key in and turn to position 1, flash the high beams 4 (or is it 5) times, press a button on the fob, turnoff key, should now work.

I believe with the VIN you could get a new key. The tough part will be proving ownership of the car which (here anyway) you would need prior to being able to get Jaguar to make you a key.

Good luck though and let us know how this turns out!

Yes, it is 100% possible to make a key using the VIN.. However, I am not sure how it works in your area, but at my dealership, you must provide proof of ownership before we will make the key.

My point was, this is the 1st time I've ever opened one up to find 2 batteries literally stacked on top of one another lol.

well well, I wonder if the embassy the car is registered to may help with clarifying who owned it. Diplomatic plates?
As others have said, you can contact Jaguar dealers with ownership proof and they'll supply a coded cut key so it can be opened and started, then a 2nd hand fob can be mated to the car for remote locking. This is the easiest way to do it unless you can track down the owner. If you do bite the bullet ask Jaguar to pull up its service history and recall info, it might just have its service passport in the upper glovebox too. I will say it's well worth a punt if you can get it cheap

Thanks guys.

I was a bit slow off the mark with this one.

My mate had told me about it a couple of weeks earlier but at the time I didn't really want another car.

It was only that he was down there on the Sunday that he reminded me about it and told me that the plates were off it.

When I went to look on the Monday during my lunch break , it had already been picked up by council.

Yep , cheap enough , as in very cheap could be a good deal. Then again it could have a blown engine or auto and that is why it was parked up.

If it works out , I should be able to get proof of ownership from Council if and when the deal is down.I will ask my local Jaguar Dealer what sort of proof they need.

If you can get into the car and send my buddy a door lock and a module he can cut a key for you and program it to a car all by mail. PM me for his contact info if you're interested.

Default proof of ownership

If you buy the car off the council after that fore-mentioned 1 year period - you have a legal proof of ownership.

good luck!

You might try searching the VIN for the pervious owners on a site like Carfax. It will sometimes show how owned the car and when. Or at least where it was registered.
