I know the obvious differences such as size and finishing but I'm wondering if there's anyone on here that's owned both?

I'm looking at 2003 -2005 year models of both these car.

Any comparative opiinons from people who HAVE actually owned both?

You might do better to post this on the XJ8/XJ6 forum as it is for the newer x350 series. But that being said, I drove the 2003 S-type when I was looking for my Jag and ultimately decided on the x308 XJR series. My wife was a huge help in deciding as she felt the S-Type looked too much like a Ford from the rear. I ultimately I preferred the style and feel of the x308. They were two very different cars. The S-Type was very refined, where the x308 seemed a bit more raw, yet refined all the same. The S-Type seemed void of personality when driving it. The drive train was wonderful as I expected it to be and the 4.2L V8 was nicer than the 4.0L that is in my XJR, but the total package won out.

That's my opinion for what its worth.

 

Thank you. I thought the 2003 XJR I looked at had the 4.0l motor @ 370HP? Is that not covered on this forum? I realize that they made some changes shortly after that but I'm not sure when.

Yes the 2003 is covered, but the real comparison is the x350 on the other forum. The cars share many more characteristics. The 2003 XJR would be a very find machine as it is the last of the x308's and has all mechanical issues corrected. If I hadn't found such a deal on my '99 the '03 is what I was really looking to purchase.

There are big differences between the x308 and the newer x350, aluminum body for one, and higher roof line and ride height as well as bigger trunk. Many would argue with me, but I like the purity to the XJ series of the x308 model to that of the x350. Again, I think the x350's have too much Ford look for my taste. Of course I will probably eat my words in 4 years when I am ready for my next vechicle, which would put the 2005 XJ in my sights.
