Default XJR steering problem

Hi all, I know the forum section is for 98s to 2003s but this particular style is what yours are and I couldn't find a section for it except "other". I will be the proud owner of a 95 XJR tomorrow that has an issue with the steering (I got a steal of a deal on it as a result ). I am very mechanically inclined and have the ability to repair it myself. I have a 96 RR that I also work on and we currently own an 04 XJR as well. So I know my way around British cars. Right now the reservoir is completely empty so there is a leak somewhere. I will repair the leak and fill it up. My question is will the wheels still turn if I crank hard enough on the steering wheel wheel? They don't and the wheel is very loose. So before I tear into it, I figured I would ask the experts. Thanks in advance everyone!

The "X300" section is your best bet. The Section heading doesn't acknowledge the X300/XJR, but that's where you belong :-)

I'm not 100% sure if I'm understanding you correctly but on my XJR you can turn the wheels left and right with the engine off (and no assist, obviously).

If the wheels won't turn it sounds like something is broken mechanically. Or...the steering column is locked :-)

Cheers

I would suggest that if there is no fluid in the PS reservoir, and you CAN'T turn the steering from side to side (with the steering column unlocked, of course), that the steering rack may have seized from lack of lubrication and the shaft or shaft coupling may be broken due to this.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll post in the X300 part of the forum next time . After further inspection I noticed that the steering rack (as suggested) is the culprit. What happened was the mounting bolt on the right side came free and the rack fell down and probably leaked fluid everywhere while getting destroyed. Although I am certain the rack needs to be replaced, I'll still bolt it back and see if I can make a miracle happen . Thanks all for the help!
