Default XJR Tires

I have a bit of a vibration when I get to around 55mph. My tires still have good tread so I think I just need to have them balanced. The tires I have are Michelin with the letters ZR instead of just R. My question is, when it comes time to replace, do I need to have the Z or can I just go with the R only? I know these can’t be the original tires so I’m wondering what tire did these cars come with from the factory. I always thought Jaguars had Pirelli but I realize it has been a while since I had one of these cars so I’m sure that changed with time.

First off and fyi, if you go to the top task bar, from the left you'll see Tools, move your mouse over it and it will drop down and give you a Tire Rim Calculator.
But yes, Pirelli was the original spec tire, tires have evolved immensely since. I am on my 3rd set, the first set that came on her were Pirelli and rode hard and I dumped them in 6 months. The 2nd set were Michelin Super Sport 255/40 ZR 18 and the sidewall was somewhat low, awesome tires, took corners like on a rail, but only lasted 10k because they were so soft. Then I went to a set of Goodyear Eagles, all I can say is NEVER put Goodyear Eagles on these cars, they were horrible even with the Z rating. I have just recently (within the yr) put Michelin Super Sports back on her, though the sidewall is quite a bit taller now, which gives a softer ride than the 1st ones, and the tread pattern it totally different, have a deeper tread and are ZR rated. I absolutely love these tires because I tend to push my car and they are softer riding than the 1st set and fill the wheel well better and perform as well. My reason for getting detailed was to tell the difference you speak of regarding tire technology.

For your Q on ZR or R, ...R is a speed rating that goes in tandem with the Z. As wide as your wheel is, a Z rated tire is what is specced for it, but you can review that with your tire provider. If there's another softer, not so aggressive tire, they should tell you...be sure to check with a couple businesses for this and not some Joe Tire special provider either. You should have NTB by you, I have Tire Kingdom (a sister company to them) here, but they will honor each others warranty.
This C&P should shed some light on it...

The speed rating code is semi-alphabetic and goes like this:
B: 50kph 31mph
C: 60kph 37mph
D: 65 kph 40mph
E: 70 kph 43 mph
F: 80 kph 50mph
G: 90kph 56mph
J: 100kph 62mph
K: 110kph 68mph
L: 120kph 75mph
M: 130kph 81mph
N: 140kph 87mph
P: 150kph 93mph
Q: 160kph 99mph
R: 170kph 106mph
S: 180kph 112mph
T: 190kph 118mph
U: 200kph 124mph
H: 210kph 130mph
V: 240kph 149mph

After V, all ratings begin with ZR and end with either W, Y or (Y) because reasons.Ok, so there is probably some entirely rational reason for this which completely escapes everyone else in the entire world. Sometimes I want to find the guy who came up with this system and administer a Jethro Gibbs head-slap.
ZRW: 270kph 168mph
ZRY: 300kph 186mph
ZR(Y): 300+kph 186+mph

However, there is another use for this information – it gives you an idea of how well the tires are built for speed. In general, speed ratings of V or above mean that the tire has extra cap plies or even multiple steel belts to provide extra stability at very high speeds – it's built better to perform better. If you're looking for a tire to run on the Autobahn in your M3, you probably want something in the ZR range. Likewise, if you're looking to put inexpensive shoes on a minivan, you probably don't need V-rated tires, even if the manufacturer put them on as the OEM choice.

Wow, thank you for the info Highhorse! I think that about covers everything I wanted to know and is much appreciated. I have the Michelins like you have currently so I will probably just stick with that when the time comes to swap instead of going with Pirelli. I do like how they perform and also how they look. But looking them up they are a bit pricey, I guess that is to be expected with this car. Lol. I see in your post you are trying to escape central florida. I was in the same position 5 years ago and managed it! Good luck and thanks again!
