Default 1990 harness plugs to analog instrument cluster wanted ...

Hi everyone,

I am not 100% +tive that my dead instrument cluster in my 1988 is toast, but if it is, I've already acquired a 1990 instrument cluster. However, I still need the harness plugs.

If my parts list is correct one male plug is 48 pin and the other is 24. Naturally, I'll need some wire length in order to splice these into my harness.

Anyone have a donor car?

I got my '90 instrument cluster from eBay -- for the price I paid, I'm beginning to think perhaps it doesn't work at all.

Thanks for the other two links, cadillac. I've emailed them and if they have them I'll find out what kind of money they need to have for them.

I may have lucked out though.

I called a local man who's been in business since the 70's; he runs a small Jaguar, MGB, Austin Healey dealership and repair. I got my key blanks from him. Anyways, I just got off the phone with him and he says there's a 1990 XJ-40 in his boneyard. The cluster may not be there, but he's pretty sure the connectors are.

If I come snip them off, I can have them for $10.

Granted I successfully found pigtails from several sources - but wow, were they ever expensive.
  1. A fellow emailed me offering to sell me the pigtails from his parts car for $80 plus $8 shipping.
  2. The same fellow came down in price to $40 for both pigtails plus 8 shipping when I basically told him how "ouch".
  3. $100 is what britishparts.com was asking.
  4. jagbits.com could supply them for $90.
Yesterday I found and clipped what I thought I needed from a dismantled 1990. Indeed, I paid the man the $10 he was asking for them.

Pic to come of what I "clipped off".

Here are the bits I clipped after I removed the instrument cluster from the donor car.

Legend:
  1. 1st cluster connector pigtail clipped at firewall
  2. 2nd cluster connector harness clipped at firewall, disconnected from the VCM switch assembly (2a) and harness clipped at the headlight switch panel (2c). I probably should have unplugged the connectors (2c) when the rest of the harness was free. Oh well, hindsight is always 20-20 is it not?.
  3. I now don't remember why I took this pigtail, but it seemed important at the time.

Note: The Cat was already on the table and wanted to get into the photo shoot.

It was chizzly (chilly and drizzly) today, so I spent a couple of hours looking over the wiring diagrams for a 1988 and 1990 XJ6. I came to one conclusion:

To keep the 1988's harness intact in order to be able to someday put back in an original, functioning vfd instrument cluster, one will have to either clip the plugs & pigtails from the non-functioning cluster you are replacing, or obtain another 1988-89 junk vfd cluster to cannibalize for parts.

I have been unable to identify these male and female connectors that Jaguar uses in order to buy "off the shelf" replacements.
