Default Automatic Seat Belt Not Working

The drivers side automatic seat belt is stuck in the restrained position and has been since I bought the car.

I've tried to move in manually without any success.

I've checked fuses and they all appear OK.

The passenger side set belt works just fine.

Any safety switches that I could check that might be tripped?

I've ordered my manual, but it hasn't arrived yet and it's the weekend and I want to work on the car.

Any suggestions on how I can get the belt to move or get it to disconnect from the pillar so I could connect and disconnect it manually?

Last I heard on the belts in the XJ40 was they had a lifetime warranty from Jag on them so I would call your local dealer and confirm then have them deal with it.

ArmyJag you are correct. I searched the NHTSA web site and found a recall initiated in 1993 that in fact states the auto passaive seat belt system does have a lifetime warranty.

The NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 93V179000.

Here's the link; http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...ct/results.cfm

Of course I'm sure Jaguar will say that my problem isn't covered. That yes my system wasn't/isn't working, but that it's unrelated to the recall.

I hate dealing with dealerships. Oh well I'll try to keep a positive attitude.

From a few threads I have read they are actually pretty good about this, the problem they are having is finding parts to repair them with.

ya'll are correct, the is/was lifetime warranty on these, BUT youre also correct, no one has/is producing these parts anymore, and you cant honor a warranty if no one makes the parts anymore and once all parts are used up. At least you can unhook or still slide in and have in the retracted position

I have good used passive restraint motor/ cable assemblies, or manual belt sets and trim panels from later XJ40 to do a conversion. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM.

Sounds like the winch motor. We used to call it the block and tackle. No dealer will grief you over it. Show some love to the dealers - there are some very good ones out there.
