Default central locking/key fob problems

Hi Everyone. I have recently become the proud owner of a 94 xj40, sovereign Gold. She is Gorgeous and i couldnt ask for a better car. When i bought her she had been in storage for four years and needed a new battery. My problem is that i can't use the key fob to operate the central locking (ive changed the battery in the fob). I have looked around on the web abit and read that i could reset the fob with the car using the ignition and the security switch under the central arm rest. This didnt work or im not doing it right. I have had the fob itself checked to see if it was faulty and i know that there is a signal coming from it.

It seems as though the car itself isnt picking up the fob signal as im not hearing any beeps or beeping. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks for looking guys.

The key fob is the single button version.

You can re-program fobs yourself. Check you are following the correct procedure for your model. See this thread in the FAQ's:
