Clunk Clunk in Right Rear-'88 XJ40
I'm assuming that the clunk I hear in my "88 XJ when I go over a bump is the rear upper shock mount? 88,000 miles
Thanks again........and do I have a heck of a story about my "90 XJ- 199,878 miles...Have you ever had the emergency brake cables come loose and catch up into the drive shaft universal? WOW!

HaHaa...and they said an old Xj40 couldn't burn rubber! Bet you shot that theory to hell.
If your car has been converted to tube shocks, the urethane "guide bush" is shot. It plugs into the top spring mounting plate, and the shock shaft goes up through it.

Yes , not only rubber burning but some aweful sounds like demons screaching out! The only thing left on the passenger side were two pieces of the shoes..no star,no springs, no pads just a hole in the inside shield. I've got only a few hundred miles to go to hit 200,000
The previous owner had the dealership convert the system on my '88. I have the receipt. Big bucks. Thanks for the info on the guide bush!

That's where the problem will be then, it's not always possible to see with everything assembled...but pretty obvious when you pull out the shock/ spring assembly and have a look. The urethane is crap after 80-100k, and the shock shaft is whacking against the mounting plate.
Re the mileage: my '92 has 183K, and I mash down on it all the time. It never says "No Mas".
