Default XK8 brake clunk

Hi guys just received my 2002 XK8 and have a few probs to look at as expected, but main one is after a couple of hours driving ok, the next day when I brake and come to a stop there is a clunk noise from front of car, doesnt occur when braking during driving at speed but only when car comes to a stop, any ideas?
Othe probs to look at are, mirrors dont seem to fold in, no noise at all.
Solar sensor dome is missing on drivers side of dash, Head rests dont move but can hear motor going, this seems to be a common problem.
Cant get cassette out of CD stacker in boot , button doest do anything, tried pushing 6" ruler under cassette to try to hit release button as suggested by forum member but to no avail.
Also whats supposed to be under the big flap on rear deck, theres a rubber flap but not fitting properly and I can see fuel tank sender, I thought it was a large speaker but no.
Any ideas guys to some of these queries

Check the brake calipers / carriers immediately!

The 'clunk' could be from sticking brakes or worn suspension bushes and may not be serious but if either the carrier bolts or caliper guide pins are loose it can be very dangerous.

Drove it today and its gone, maybe because it was wet when it happened, ?????
going to have a go at getting the mirrors to fold tomorrow
rear view mirror flopped down this morning, the back is broken so it wont tighten on ball joint, looks like a new mirror is needed $$$$$$$$$

Hello,

I know this is a very old thread but sounds like i may have a similar issue...

I purchased my XKR a few weeks back but have only driven it 2 or 3 times and now starting to get to grips with what might need sorting. I bought it as a bit of a project car but think most work will be aesthetic as mechanically it seems in good shape and has been well looked after.

However, i have noticed that when braking to a complete stop there is what sounds like a sliding noise like something is loose under the bonnet. It does not appear to happen when braking hard at speed so is probably not something rattling around completely free. It happens just before coming to a complete stop and there is no knocking when going over speed bumps for example.

The front suspension bushes were replaced in February as I have a receipt for this from the previous owner but is it possible something hasn't been put back together correctly?

What would be the best way to diagnose if it is the brake carriers as i fear it might be this?

Thanks,

Owen

Default Maybe not the brakes.... transmission maybe

Well as you don’t have the braking stop problem at speed it could be either the transmission or the suspension.

My bet is that it’s old ATF fluid in the gear book as 2-1-stop is a common problem on the ZF gearboxes. Just needs ATF fluids and filter change.

For the suspension, needs a car jack and good look at the strut mounts, and suspension arm bushes, including the sway bars.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply.

I think you may well be right about the transmission as the timing of the noise is very consistent. It does sound like a clunky downshift.

When cycling through park, reverse, neutral and drive while not moving the transitions are quite audible too.

Will look into changing the fluid and filter as you suggested and see how it goes.

Cheers,

Owen

When you start searching for gaskets, filter and fluids keep in mind the XKR doesn't use the ZF transmission. The ZF is for the XK8, the XKR is a mercedes unit.

Hi Avern,

I have a 2003 model year so has a 4.2L engine and the 6 speed ZF transmission used in the x150.

Have just seen the sticky for ZF gearbox faults... Looks like there is quite a lot of relevant info there. Missed it as i was searching for braking issues.

Anyway, nice to meet you all! I will probably be here quite regularly

Check tightening all the frame bracing in the engine area and under car if a convertible.
