First, welcome to the forum, robc7gt:
Please take a moment and introduce yourself in the New Members/Intro section. We try to be a real friendly place around here!

Second, take a moment to read this post from a few days ago, in which Don gives the poster some sage advice regarding a similar non-starting car. Mostly, don't panic. These things are frequently more of a nuisance than a catastrophe. Best of luck! Scott

Hi robc7gt
I had a similar problem as Scott points out with my car, I went thru a whole lot of things and if you read my posts (moodieblue) you may find the answer. The guys on this forum are pretty clued up when it comes to all things related to these cars

Get a voltage/ohm meter and check crank sensor, cam sensor, and speed sensor. Specs are in Haynes manual and or somewhere on this site. You have spark and fuel. Test fuel pressure for volume. But I suspect a sensor.

Hi Jagfixer,

You're right to suspect a sensor, but for clarity, robc7gt's car is a '94 XJ40, so it doesn't have a cam sensor or speed sensor (except in the transmission). It does have a crank sensor, which is one of the key components discussed in the other threads that MidwestJag and Moodieblue have referenced.

Perhaps you're thinking of the X300, which does have a camshaft sensor (CMP), but the ECM only refers to its signal to establish initial ignition timing, and thereafter determines timing exclusively based on the CKPS (X300 lingo for the CPS). An X300 engine will eventually start even if the cam sensor goes bad - it just has to use trial and error based on the CKPS signal until it figures out where cylinder 1 TDC is on the compression stroke. But robc7gt doesnt' have to worry about any of that. He may have a problem with his CPS though, just as you suspect....

Cheers,

Don
