Exclamation Crazy Problem

Well, I have an 89' Jaguar XJ40. Occasionally it likes to do this funny thing where the spedometer, fuel meter, oil meter, coolant meter, and which ever other meter is on the left side like to start flashing brighter and dimmer. Then the spedometer needle either gets stuck on zero, whips back and forth between zero and 50, or whips back and forth between zero and 130.

All I have to do is give it a good smack on the top of my dash and it stops immediately. I had a problem with the water drain under my hood being clogged up with leaves when I first got the car causing water to drip over my firewall until I got it cleaned out.

Not sure if that's the cause? most likely though I'm assuming. How do I fix that?

Also my car likes to cycle through all of the warnings on the right display sometimes. It pops up with ones like check engine or coolant level low or brake fluid or brake pressure low, along with a lot of other ones.

Now I'm pretty sure I don't have that much wrong with my car, and I got it checked out right when I bought it.

Not sure what that's all about either??

Anyways my car runs great other than the goofy electrical stuff so not sure what's up.

J4G-Off, I would venture to guess that you are either getting water on the back of the instrument cluster or on the engine computer itself (more towards the instrument cluster). The water running over the wiring can cause the computer to see funny things and really drive it nuts. So, you may need to pull out the instrument cluster, do a look back there and see if you can spot any water residue. From there, you can trace it back and see where you leak is. Most likely it is the windshield seal. But, could be a seal around one of the wire bundles running into the engine bay.

I would say the same as Thermo. It's a tedious job, so just get to it.

yeah I may just have someone else look at it. I can get a new speedo cluster off ebay for relatively cheap if I need to.
