Default Fuel Fault 39 1991 XJ40

Hi everyone.
Restoration is proceeding nicely. The car threw a fuel Fault code 39 today Now I know it has to do with the EGR system. What I need is where can I find a proceedure to follow to determine what needs to be replaced? Anyone in the forum? Your help is most appreciated.

It is an EGR temp sensor circuit fault. The temp sensor is under the intake manifold and watches for a rise in temp when the EGR valve actuation is requested by the ECM. If no rise is seen then a fault is logged. Most likely cause is a carbon buildup in the EGR tube connection at the intake manifold.

Jaguar publication S91 has all the explanation and fault finding engine managment info for the XJ40 1990 to 1994 MYs. It is in paper or .pdf format but it is over 13mb so it will not email with most email providers.

Can't help much with this. We have a totally different emissions setup on UK spec cars. eg. No EGR, Air pump, no evap canister etc. 92, 4.0 XJ40

Pull throttle body, obstructed tube enters bottom of intake vertically about two inches from the throttle body flange. That's what is packed with carbon as Bob inferrs.

The way I got mine was to get a job as a mechanic at a Jaguar dealer and collect as much info as I could. You could try HELMS manuals??

I think I figured it out. EGR valve didn't hold a vacuum so I replaced it. Bought it online -great price ( $81 free ship and it got here in 1 day) I reset the ECU and later wil find out if I got it right.
Thank you all for your help.

EGR valve is easy to test. I got the same code. Removed the valve cleaned it, insured no obstruction. Ensured it opened and closed under normal vacume power.
