Default Headliner question

Since parking outside for the last 6 months I've been anticipating a sagging headliner. So far, all OK but sooner or later I'm sure it will let go.

What material is the backing board made from on an XJ40?

Reason I ask is I'm planning on using "saggy stoppers" instead of replacing the whole shebang - however someone suggested that on the XJ40 the backing board itself disintegrates, (not the foam) so there's nothing left to fasten to?

Hey Larry, I'm sitting here in the garage mentally preparing to do the "hard reset" on Roger. the headliner is already fallen out of the Moneyfunnel. The backing appears to be a compressed foam stuff, also there are areas where there appear to be fiberglass fibers. Not Masonite or any paperboard product. Mine looks like it would hold up to a gentle scrubbing of the old liner backing, but I would definitely be very careful trying to remove the whole piece. I suppose if you were in a Very hot dry place it might be dried out enough to not hold but I know this car sat out for at least 2 years and the board seems ok to be re- covered. Hope that helps....

The headliner board in our '93 was also a compressed plastic foam like Jerry describes. It may have originally been white, but it was yellow when I replaced the headliner. It was definitely sturdy enough to withstand a light brushing with a brass-bristle brush to clean away old headliner adhesive and foam.

See the first couple of photos here:

Thanks Don, as it happens I was able to load all 7 pics tonight, so the J-L archive is getting flushed out on the new site bit by bit.
