High idle 89 xj40
I have an 89 VDP that I've slowly been fixing up over the last few years. A while back, I replaced the motor. Afterwords, it had trouble starting in cold weather, so I replaced the throttle body with that of the old engine (more for process of elimination than any other reason). The engine still does not start well at cold temperatures, and now the motor has inherited the high idle of the old engine. When the engine is sufficiently warm, it idles at about 1200 rpm in park. However, when the car is first started, it idles at about 700 rpm. I tried adjusting the idle screw, but the throttle rod (my term) can't move back any further (so it can't be insufficient tension on the spring). My concern is that the potentiometer is keeping the throttle rod and plate from falling back into a lower idle position. However, when I adjusted the potentiometer, it was all the way in one position, meaning there may not be any more slack (though I cannot remember which direction it was adjusted).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I will probably loosen the potentiometer bolts and see if that gives me more slack. However, as some may recall, the potentiometer is not the easiest thing to get to on the 3.6, and I don't have the right size wrench to do it at home. If anyone has ever run into a similar problem, I would greatly appreciate your assistance.
