Default Hydralic Pump Blanking Plate = Leak?

Question for anyone that's removed their SLS front pump... I just got done rebuilding my engine and replacing all the front seals and such, including pulling the hydraulic pump. I started turning over my car for the first time and had oil gushing out of the notch at the bottom of the hydraulic pump mounting area where the blanking plate goes. The plate covers this notch, but doesn't cover this notch on the inside of the pump area, so it's still essentially wide open.

When you remove the front hydraulic pump on the XJ40 and replace it with a blanking plate, is the intermediate shaft seal EAC5721 supposed to be the only thing sealing the oil from leaking...or do I still need to leave the old pump drive plate bolted in there?

I'm wondering if I may have the wrong seal or perhaps damaged it during reassembly...but was looking for some opinions before I start destroying and reinstalling $55 oil seals!

Thanks,
Pete

Default Leaking seal

I did away with the SLS and replaced rear shocks and springs on my wifes car recently,Just pulled off the pump, quick look -see,no leaks, and went with it!

I will make up a cover for it later, but the seal on the shaft seems to be doing the job.A cover would keep some road crud out,But as i will be in the radiator area again, replacing rad mount bushes,i will do it then.

Can you replace the seal in-situ?

hope this helps,Jim.
