Hey everybody, I've got more fun issues that I would appreciate help on. My poor 1988 Vanden Plas decided tonight in a downpour to strip the gears out of the wiper motor, I need to know what the process is to change it, and what could have possibly motivated it to do this. The other issue I'm having is that immediately upon turning on my air conditioning/heater, the drivers side blower motor fuse blows, I assume this may have to do with the leak I'm experiencing in the floorboards, but I've found online how to stop that. More importantly, will this motor need replaced, and how does one go about doing it?

Hi Mr. Hotrod,
I don't have much time but to give you a quick reply, working on the wiper motor is a little convoluted but I think it may be slightly easier on your '88 than on our '93. I think the instructions are either in the Haynes manual or the XJ40 eBook at the Jag-Lovers forum. You can download most of the Haynes manual at this link:

Join the Jag-Lovers forum (jag-lovers.org) for free so you can access the XJ40 eBook as well as the mountain of XJ40 information available in the archives. The eBook will tell you a lot about your blower motor. It sounds to me like it is either swamped with water, there is an internal short, or the motor has seized. All of those problems can be resolved. I have been able to resuscitate seized motors by working oil into the shaft bushings at both ends of the motor - use a thin machine oil like 3-in-1 oil and use a straw or red WD-40 nozzle to work oil onto the shaft below the squirrel cage fan.
Hopefully others will chime in with additional info.
Cheers,
Don
