Shifter stuck in park, 88 VP.
Garaged the car last fall, run her up take her for a ride, shifter would not move. Lifted the car, was able to move the shift lever by hand. Today I disassembled everything necessary to remove the shift cable. I found the cable to be rusted up solid.
Question: would you guys recommend applying anything on the new cable to help prevent this.

Motorcycle owners may disagree but in general it is not advised to apply liquid lubricant to a cable because the lube will attract dust and debris that can contribute to restricted cable movement. One thing you could consider applying to the cable is powdered graphite, but a good clean, dry cable should work well for many years.

Yes Sir, graphite! At this point I have the shift assembly inside on the bench cleaning things up a bit. Removal consisted of removing the two screws securing the ash tray, undo the two plastic wing nuts securing the wood face plate. From there I removed the three bolts and two screws securing the shift assembly. The plastic switch on the side of the shifter has to be removed to undo the shift cable. Revove the two bolts securing the cable to the transmission, one nut on the shif lever.
