Default Sticking Brake Pedal

I was sitting at a stoplight in San Rafael today. After the light turned green, I took my foot of the brake pedal and hit the gas. I noticed something was wrong pretty quickly. The car was moving at a very slow pace, and I'm not talking the usual "tired snail" acceleration that's typical of a heavy British motorcar, the car was moving as if I'd thrown an anchor overboard. Long story short, the brake was sticking. I gave it a few taps, there was kind of a "CHUNK" sound, the pedal raised, and I was off. Anyone know what could have caused this? Thanks!

I figure it's got to be in the pedal housing. Not a common problem.
