chitownred,
Love to help, but, your description is way too vague...... detail please...
Bonnet lights.... you mean the ones on the underside of the bonnet that illuminate the engine bay when the bonnet is up.....?
Won't start..... ? What's it doing....describe.
Are there any codes on the VCM?

What "line" are you referring to.... battery cable, fuel supply....????
Is the engine cranking, but not engaging.....????
Do you get nothing when you turn the key....??? No noise, just a clicking sound...., or nothing at all...
Describe in detail, when you turn the key...... what happens..... describe the behavior of the car when the key is engaged.

You will have to have it reset at a service facility that has a Jaguar scan tool. The security systems and ECUs in these cars are becoming increasingly troublesome as the cars age.
One of my research projects is finding modern replacements for them.

Short answer...yes.
Problem is the lack of security system schematics for pre-93 MY's. I have not been able to locate any wiring diagrams for my '89 equipped with the security system. Most of the early MY's were dealer installed systems, (Jaguar equipment), but no wiring diagrams, at least not made publicly available.
I'm sure somebody has one, hope they show up soon, I want to upgrade my radio, but won't until I have the proper mapping to ensue no problems.
If I'm not seeing something.... somebody.... speak up!!!
Rob is correct; aftermarket radios can and will cause problems with the security system. Another point I'd like to add to my earlier advice; if you know someone who would be willing to let you use their key fob or you buy a used one you should be able to use that to shut off the security system - click it 5 times.
It should be under the center armrest cover, it's a toggle switch. I don't think that will help you. I'm not sure about a '91, but I think you either have to use the fob to reset, or enter the security code via the original radio. The CPU needs the input in order for it to know all is well.
You might want to enter a post in the section orientated towards Audio/Visual and see if anyone has a fix for you.
Another option, though I have never performed the task, is what is refereed to as a "hard re-boot or hard boot" (I think) in resetting the CPU. Research the forum archives for how to accomplish this task. Personally, I would never do this, seems the risk out weighs the reward, but I have read people have done so. Research before you do it. I do not know if it would work or not. I've clearly stated my position on it. You wold be doing so at your own risk.
Advice for the future, thoroughly research the forums before you do any modifications to these vehicles. Most people would advise against drastic mods to the electrical systems on these cars. Radio conversions have been done, but I don't recall anyone having the issues you are experiencing, unless of course they didn't report the problem.
Good luck.

The hard re-boot is where (if I'm correct) you remove the negative (-) battery terminal from the battery and briefly (very briefly) touch it to the positive (+) battery terminal and then reconnect it to the negative terminal. I have never spoken to anyone who has ever done this.
