Default What tires for my Jag?

Hi all,

I don't always change tires, but when I do, I prefer Pirelli...

But, seriously, I've changed tires at least 6 times and always put Pirelli P5. However, they're getting harder to find and I'm considering other brands.

Recommendations welcome!

What size are you after? I can't remember what your car would use. If you have 15" wheels, well, the choices are becoming limited. But....for some reason I'm thinking you have 16" wheels and need a 225/60x16 tire.

Anyhow.....

Next, what are your priorities? Quietness? Wet traction? High speed driving? Cornerning/steering respsonse? Long tread life?

If you're a gentle/moderate driver there are any number of "touring" or "All Season" tires that'll be satisfactory.

Cheers

Tire size is 205/70 R15. There is also an optional 215/60. Pirelli makes the Scorpion STR in this size, and I can probably find them at tire rack.com.

I'm interested in what others are using and their experience.

Thanks

I haven't put new tires on the Jag yet but I Have a 2000 beetle and put
Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetrics on it and can honestly say they are the best tires I have ever bought! Admittedly my beetle is lowered on sports suspension but it sticks to the road and corners like glue with these tires on!

I just (two weeks ago) got a set of 225x60R16 Pirelli P6 Four Seasons for '93 XJ6 (updated to 16" wheel by a previous owner back in the 90s). I replaced Bridgestone Potenza. Had them shipped to local shop by Tire Rack @ $147./ea plus shipping. Went to local shop first as a courtesy (because they always do the best possible job right down to the last detail) and when I mentioned the Tire Rack price my guy said "buy them there and we'll be happy to put them on here ... that price is lower than our cost", so, that's what I did and, hey, everybody's happy. Anyway ... Pirelli P6 EXCELLENT, FANTASTIC (think-up any other superlative adjective you can and I'll use it)! Ride, traction, handling, acceleration ... all beyond any expectations I had. (I don't doubt Michelin would be great, too, at, like, twice the price.). Obviously, I don't know anything about durability yet, but at, what, 4,000 - 5,000 miles/year at most I'm not losing any sleep over it. They're 51psi max, so I seem to like 40 or 42 cold ... (best combination of smooth ride and road feel). If you want the smoothest ride you ever thought possible go down into the high 30s. I have to laugh at myself sometimes, because I guess owning a nice old Jaguar has turned me into a "car guy".

When I used to have an XJ40 , I had switched to Michelin Primacy HP along with 16" wheels 225/55/16 and very liked them during my ownership

The last time I bought tires for my 1992 Sovereign I used Michelin MXV4 Energy 205/70-15.

They are old and cracking, the car has been sitting so I will be looking for tires soon.

I put a new fuel pump in it on Saturday and got it running.
The brake accumulator sphere is weak so I'll be looking for that also.

Everything still works and it drives great.

On my 16" wheels I run Kumho Excsta Platinums, 225/60 R16 98W - about $100 a piece from Tire rack - excellent all-season tire, super quiet.

Good feedback guys my 91 was bought with th tyres almost bald they are 225/65/15 Ill look at pirellis but tyres like most other things are more expnsive in australia. I like yokies , quiet , grip...outstanding but pirellis could be the go. For me grip and ride is most important.

Default Always Pirelli

Last time I purchased tires for my 92 Xj40 the salesman tried to talk me into Yokohamas. But, I chose P5's instead. Months later I took the car back for a rotation. This time, the store owner (an older fellow) waited on me, he asked me why I selected the Pirellis. My answer was that I had always heard Jaguars handle better on them, and it's the only brand I've ever owned.

"You made the right choice." Was his response. "I've been selling tires most of my life, and I can tell you Jags like yours don't do well with any other brand I'm aware of".

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm also looking for new tires for my 90 XJS, currently have Pirelli P600s. I noticed on another forum someone was recommending Bridgestone Pole position AS980s.

Default I have an original 15" Pirelli 6000 on original wheel ...

I have an original 15" Pirelli 6000 on the original 15" alloy wheel (original from 1993 XJ6). The tire is about 2/3 used-up, and getting it to France may not be practical, but the tire and wheel would be yours for the shipping. Any interest and I'll post photos. (It was the spare left in the boot since a rotation sometime in the 90s which I just replaced with a 16" to go with the rest of the tires on the car.

Opinions vary, naturally. The old tire store guy is certainly entitled to his own. And, to be honest, one of the first commandments in any retail job is to praise, not criticize, the customer's choices. Would you really expect him to say anything derogatory ?

IMHO tire design keep improving. There are umpteen types of tires out there. I think it makes sense to consider all the choices.

OTOH, if you're happy with a particular brand, well, that's what counts!

As I recall that was a Jaguar-specific size. I *think* the originals even had a "J" in the designation....P6000J or something like that.

Walmart has 15" General Ultimax tires for $80 per tire. I really like them. Take a look.

well fellas Im getting serious about buying tires...and finding them is proving difficult especially in the 99 load carrying capacity that seems to be required to pass a roadworthy here in victoria australia. Any ideas? Looking at 235 60 15 as nobody seems to make 225/65 15's any more.
