Wingmirror replacement etc.
Hi all, nice forum you have here
I have a 1993 model XJ40.
A couple of weeks ago some idiot took one of my wingmirrors right
off, damaging the chrome so it won't clip on and breaking the
plastic structure that the chrome clips in to.
I bought a replacement (used) mirror on ebay (for 99p) but when I
went to fit it the electrical connectors which I thought would be
the same (Both old and new are D-Shaped connectors but the old ones
are blue and cream and the new ones are black and white
respectively) were different when plugged in, and only worked up
and down (when I pressed the side-to-side buttons) so for the
moment I have used the new chrome on the old mirror, temporarily.
I have thought about a couple of options....the old one didn't have
its springs but was held on by screws (presumably drilled through
its plastic frame by its last owner) so I was thinking I could just
take the old motor and mirror out of the old mirror and put them in
the new mirror, keeping the old connections so it would all work.
How does the motor come out? I can't seem to figure out what's
holding it in.
The other option is re-wiring the connectors of the new one to fit
the car's connectors but that could get a bit complicated.
At the moment I have rather precariously "glued" the new chrome onto the old mirror with silicone sealant as a temporary measure but since the plastic on the old mirror is still a bit damaged and the spring doesn't exist I would like to use the new one, or as much of it as possible i.e the new mirror plastic parts/framewith the old motor/glass.
I know you experts can help me out here so hit me with everything
you've got....
