Default Woofers below seat on 89? 4" or 5.25"?

Question for the sound gurus...

My speakers below the seats are shot...completely shot that it's an audio embarrassment as the rubber for the woofer is in a pile at the bottom of the speaker grill.

I put in a couple 4", 2 way 4 ohm full range speakers in there and it fits perfectly and it sounds immensely better. However... I ran across some mention of using 5.25" speakers/woofers in this location? Is this possible on the 1989's? Do you need to pull out the housing and recesses the speaker into the below-seat cavity, or are you doing some sort of modification to this area to make the 5.25" speakers fit?

4" was definitely the largest that was going to fit that stock housing, but if it's possible, I would love to move these to the door and put in something a little larger in the back...whether it's a full range or just sub is another area for debate as well..

Thanks!
Pete

The early 3.6 liter cars had smaller subwoofers in the rear.

The 1990> cars had larger speakers.

I knew the doors were larger speakers...but then I ran across an article on crutchfield with someone and their 1988 that they fitted 5.25" speakers under the seats...

Dan Hackney's 1988 Jaguar XJ6

...that's why I was wondering if it was just a matter of pulling out the speaker housing...

Just FYI, on my 89 I was able to put a 5.25" in, under the seats, without cutting anything. Basically just have to pop the grill off, remove the four screws that hold the speaker in, and pop out the plastic speaker mounting frame. Ideally you probably want a ring that will space it out slightly, as you could run into some interference from the carpet....but the opening was large enough to allow my aftermarket speaker. I drilled a couple extra small holes to mount the speaker securely, but I didn't have to hack away at metal panels or do anything destructive...
