Default XJ-40 Timing Chain? or Timing Belt?

Hi everyone,

I just like to ask if the 4.0L engine that the XJ-40 has a timing belt or timing chain? I recently purchased a 1994 Jaguar XJ-6 and was wondering if I need to replace the timing belt since it already have 188K miles, and there's no record of any timing belt/chain that have been replaced, just to be on the safe side.

Also I'm looking for a tan center arm/rest for the xj6 (XJ40) and headboard/headliner.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
C1ue1ess

As previously state, you have a chain which you can check for whether it needs to be replaced using procedure in FSM. Lumppy47 mentioned about getting a Haynes manual -- they are okay for some really basic stuff, but if you are serious about doing much with your car or really understanding it, such as electrical issues, you really need a FSM. You can get it on fleabay for about $30 on a CD with pdf's and print only the pages you need. The book version is typically VERY expensive. It takes a while to understand, but will pay for itself very quickly if you need to troubleshoot electrical problems. Highly recommended for any car that you are going to keep for long and want to work on yourself.

At 188k miles, I would say you need to at least inspect the timing chain, and to probably replace the tensioners and chain supports as a minimum

Thanks guys! Great inputs, as of the time being, I've already put around 2K more on the car for new tires, wheel alignment, serpentine belt replacement, oil change, and control arm bushing replacement, new air filters, new rear break rotors and pads.

The service shop recommended that I go to a jaguar dealer to replace the pinion shaft seal, and add synthetic 75W-40 gear oil on the differential. They said they don't have the tool to do the work..... Oh my!

Another issue is that my wiper stops at around 45 degrees (assuming lying flush at the left side base is 0 degrees) but will wipe from 0 to 180 degrees. Kinda weird, and it doesn't look like adjusting the arm to lie flush with the bottom of the windshield would work as it would go way past the base line of the windshield. Any suggestions?

Also the door panel at the driver side seem to be disconnecting and upon closer inspection, it looks like it's hitting the carpet when closed and will force the panel to open when I open the door.

It's kinda funny when I thought I would save some money when I bought this Jag for 1.9K, when I could've bought an accord for a lot less mileage for $4K.... I'm beginning to think I would be spending a lot more in the time to come.... I guess it makes sense what cuengineer has suggested, and try and do everything myself. Maybe I'll learn something out of downloading FSM. Already browsing through the suggested sites, and probably download a copy soon.

A lot more issues, but most are non-mechanical and I could deal with them last. I first need to make this car dependable before anything else... I'll be reading a lot here. Looks like a great place to learn about the car.

Cheers!

Just bought the Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign FSM (Oct. 1986-Sept. 1994)... Not sure if this is the right one. I don't think my car is the Sovereign. From what I know so far is that I have the 4.0L I-6 engine. Anyone know if I got the right FSM?

I would be more than happy if someone can point me to a link available for download.

With a car of that age and miles, you can end up spending FOR EVER ! I know because I had an XJ6 Series 3 for 14 years. Suffice to say, you must concentrate on fixing the things that have to be fixed, and also be ingenious when confronting the inevitable problems that will occur.
