XJ wont start on the key
Hi Guys
Need help sorting my 1994 XJ40 3.2 sport. I was cruising along and needed to pass a truck up a hill so I moved the Jgate shifter across to manual operation, shifted down to 3rd... all good, needed more grunt so tried to shift to 2nd... It wouldnt go into 2nd, so I pushed a little harder.... Snap! and it went into 2nd. Roared passed the truck, whipped her up to the redline in 2nd and 3rd, changed into forth and cruised home, no problems. Now car will not start.
There is a round plastic rotary dust cover just under the Jgate shifter, This is what snapped. Does this affect anything? The idiot lights behind each letter P,R,N,D,3,2 on the shifter no longer illuminate when gears selected. Everything else works, Everything! All dash lights and info lights work when ignition on, no warning lights or faults present. All fuses good, both sides and centre console. When ignition turned on Park switch works, I can feel it through brake pedal when I move gear stick. The solenoid to the left of jgate also works, (moves in and out when I turn the key on) Car will start if I push the gate closed manually on the relay located under where the glove box is. (relay looks like old school copper winding, I saw this on another post) When I start the car this way, everything works and drives as it should.
Questions: Does the round plastic dust cover under the jgate trigger anything? Park?
If the idiot lights behind the jgate are not illuminated will the trans not realize its in "Park" therefore not start.
Or Is there a reset procedure for immobilizer if it has one?
Everything else works! Everything. Car is in fantastic condition and only done 88,000 kms.
And yes I know I should not have forced her into 2nd.
Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks, Duane.

Hi Duane2,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
If memory serves correctly, on your '94 the Park/Neutral switch is part of the rotary switch on the left side of the transmission. The switch wiper rotates when the gear selector cable moves the lever on the gearbox. I'm wondering if a broken piece of the dust cover or some other part of your J-gate is preventing the gear selector lever from seating fully in the Park position, so the Park/Neutral switch is not telling the ECM and CPU that it is OK to crank the engine. Try starting with the gear selector in the Neutral position. If that works, you may need to disassemble your J-gate to the extent necessary to determine whether something is interfering with the gear selector lever seating in Park.
When you get a moment, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don

Hi All, Im a new member, and have a problem with my 1994 XJ40 3.2 sport.
1st, How the problem came about. I was passing a truck up a hill, dropped the jgate down into 3rd, needed more power, so tried to push jgate to second, it wouldnt go so pushed a bit harder... Something went snap!! it shifted into second and I blasted pass the truck. Car ran perfect all the way home. When I went to put her in the garage, No go.
2nd. Car wont start on the key.
- Car will start when key on, If I push the gate closed on the relay (looks like old school copper winding with gate) relay situated under dash just below airbag on passenger side.
When started this way car runs perfectly, No warning lights, all instruments working.
- Under the Jgate cover , centre console, there is a circular dust cover just under the Jgate. This is what snapped in half. (Is this just a dust cover? Or does it trigger something?)
- All fuses are fine, both left and right and centre fuse boxes.
- Only thing not working in entire car is the idiot lights for the jgate (P,R,N,D,3,2) That let you know what gear you are in. They used to work before I forced into second gear.
- Park switch at jgate works, can feel it clicking at brake pedal when I move the shifter.
- solenoid located to the top left, of jgate also working. ( can see it moving in and out when key is turned on )
Questions: - Does the circuit board Located just under the jgate, That houses the idiot lights to let you know which gear you are in, Need to be working so the car realizes you are in park, and then start?
- Does the circular dust cover below the shifter, That I have broken do anything? trigger anything? or is it just a dust cover?
- Has anyone else forced there jgate into 2nd when the shouldnt have, (Like I have done) and had a similar problem?
- As I have disconnect the battery to work on car, Do I need to reboot, reset imobilser etc?
Everything else works, Car starts and runs fine when I use the copper wound relay under dash to start. Oh battery is also good, fully charged and load tested, works perfectly.
Car has only travelled 88,000 kms and its condition reflects this.
Any ideas before I go buying a load of parts I do not need?
And yes, I know it was naughty to force shifter into 2nd gear
Any help appreciated, Duane.
