Default XJ40 bumper sides mis-align. Problem with guide blocks?

Dear fellow Jaguar entousiasts,

Something I have been wondering about for a quite some time is why the side bits of my front and rear bumpers on my 1991 XJ40 slightly mis-align. The dont sit flush with the body of the car, and the right rear has some play in it. This might be due to loose bolts and nuts that connect the side bit to the main part, but I've always wondered if the guide blocks are a part that need replacement after 30 years.
I have removed the front bumper, in order to replace the rubber bumper cover. I then realised that the entire steel frame of the bumper is rusted quite badly, so I intend to restore the thing with a good sandblasting and a nice fresh coat of paint. I then remembered the guide blocks and checked the front ones out. They seem okay and I cannot quite tell if there is more play in them than from factory, but it seems odd to me that you can put your finger in between the side bit of the bumper and the cars body.

Any ideas or intell?

Kind regards,

Douwe de Jong
