I'm embarking on a project to convert an XJ40 to run full X308 running gear so I am quite interested in this topic. Looking at engine bays, the front suspension turrets are different. The XJ40 must have different length of front shock as they come through much higher up in the engine bay? Does it ride at the same angle though? I'm hoping to fabricate the bolt in top mounts into the XJ40 inner arches. Failing that, cut out the pannel that the bolt-in mounts bolt to and weld them into the XJ40.
What is the deal with the rear end? Are the X308 shocks longer as well? I'm assuming that they are contained within the rear subframe and do not mount directly to the monocock?
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
As you've noticed, the front shocks on the XJ40 mount directly through a hole in a reinforced section of the wheel well, while the X308 has a separate bolt-on mount. Off the top of my head, the geometry or mounting angle of the shock absorber is different, and the shape of the wheel well is very different. You'll just have to compare the two to see if you can fabricate a means of using the X308 mounts. Otherwise you may be able to use the XJ40 front shocks with the X308 control arms, but I'm not sure.
The rear shock upper ends do mount to the monocoque via the upper mounting plate, which is Part 6 in this diagram:
It is possible that the X308 mounting plates will bolt right into the XJ40 body, but you'll just have to try it to see.
