XJ40 vs. Series 3
My Jag mechanic offered me a 1990 XJ6 with 20,700 origional miles. Garage kept by an 87 year old woman. She no longer drives and he is selling it for her. He will sell it to me for 3500 dollars plus my silver 1982 Series 3 withy no heat or ac, minimal rust around the wind screens, and a dent on the fender and door (driver side). Fair deal? I prefer the look of the series 3 but a low mile Jag is tempting even if it's the XJ40.
nothing is wrong with the XJ40. It is silver with Black interior. Yes I prefer the round lights and the shape of the boot on the earlier car, but the XJ40 is still a Jag! To awnser your question though the xj40 is supposedely perfect.

If the Series III is in pretty good condition, keep the Series III. While the XJ40 is a great driving car, the Series III has a much better chance of increasing in value. I have seen excellent examples of Series IIIs sell for $10k-$15K.
I have both a 1979 XJ6III and a 94 XJ12 (as well as 2002 X-Type)

Assuming everything works on the XJ40 I would go for that. You're going to spend a lot of money getting the Series III to where XJ40 is in terms of condition and driveability. The XJ40 is also likely to be more reliable.
