Default ZF steering rack

hello my ZF steering rack was worn out and I decided to replace it with a remanufactured steering rack.
Jaguar XJ40 VIN 633008 year 91
I was told that ZF produced three(?) types for the XJ40 but they should all work the same.
workshop called me up today that there is a problem fitting the remanufactured part - I guess the problem is in the area between steering rack and lower steering column (damper - universal joint?)
ZF number of the old steering in the car 7852 974 249 CCC 6021

ZF number of the remanufatured part 7852 974 229 CCC 6543
pic of the part that doesnt fit

sry for strange austrian english maybe someone has a hint in regard of these numbers thanks !

Hi - Possibly you can determine the correct replacement part number from the JHT website - good luck!

Power Steering Rack Assembly - Parts For XJ6 (2.9, 3.2, 3.6, 4.0) from (V)500001 to (V)667828 | Jaguar Classic Parts UK

Larry

edit - I just noticed the CCC6543E replacement is designed for cars with a vin between (V)667829 to (V)708757

I believe the earlier cars used Adwest racks, and later cars used the ZF. My 9/1991 XJ6 uses the Adwest rack.

IIRC the ZF rack sits at a different angle and the because of that the lower steering column is different.

Nick, if you look at the pic of the OP's original rack, you can see it's a ZF with a manufacturing date of 11/92 ...not sure why this would be on a 91MY though unless it too was a replacement?

Thanks Lawrence. That's very odd. My original rack is Adwest, Jaguar part CBC9053. My car is sequence number 656772. AFAIK, the ZF racks came in 1993.

It's not an XJR, right?

11/92 would definitely be MY93, so that rack is most likely a replacement...

Thx for the replies! according to friends - mechanics the new / remanufactured steering rack is 1/2in 10-12mm in difference to the one that was pulled out of the car. I was also told that the Adwest would fit , but hydraulic lines need to be adapted (are different?) I drive the car since several years on a day to day basis - do not know if any changes have been made earlier. Also have to confess that I destroyed the car on the right front (passenger side, bumper fender..). Mechanics say it shouldn't have had an influence to the steering rack

Default thx for the link

Thanks Lawrence for pointing out the link - footled around the JEPC (jaguar electronic parts catalogue) I understand that the MMA3891AA supersedes the CCC5651 and CCC6021 (pic1 and 2)

- the MMA3891AA = CCC6021 has a length of 1180 mm = 46 29/64in (pic3)

- also found the information that the ZF CCC6543 has a length of 1190 mm = 46 27/32in (pic4)

even found these infos on a chinese page called "KAKA"parts - but I guess I wont order from kakaparts - sounds too funny.

maybe this is useful for other users
