I've seen conflicting information about the 15" Chrome Turbo Rims regarding the rim WIDTH. I see some places saying 5.5" and others say 6". Does anyone know definitively for sure? I'm getting ready to purchase a new set of tires and want to put on the largest set possible without compromising ride quality. I know the OEM tire size is E70-15, which equates directly to 205/70/15. More indirectly to 215/70/15. My present size on the car now is 215/65/15 Coker Red Lines (POS tires). But I've had in the past 235/60/15 Comp TA's, (which were probably WAY to wide- but looked cool); a set of Dunlop 225/60/15 (which were also probably too wide). Trying to find the ideal size for Florida (no snow - but don't want summer tires that wear out too quickly). And I don't want tires from China. Prefer American made, or British or Germany. I know my choices are limited. I don't want to buy a PREMIUM tire as this is my around town car. And not my "drive the wheels off" style of driving.
My understanding is that the Chrome Turbo wheels were 5.5" wide on the 6-cylinder E-Types and 6.0" wide on the sedans and V12 E-types.
With a 6" wide wheel a 215/70 or 215/65 is probably as big as you'd want to go. For 225s and 235s you'd ideally have a wider wheel. It's not the end of the world to use them on a 6" wheel but they may not work quite right with the sidewalls pinched-in, if you get what I mean
