17x8 bmw wheels fitted to series iii
I'm still working through the center caps on the front due to the size of the hub. Initial modifications are promising, just need to make the mounting tabs a bit smaller to fit between the wheel and the hub. Rears fit no problem.
I went with some pretty wide 225 55 17 from Bridgestone, they run wide for 225s. Maybe a narrower 225 or even a 215 would have worked better. Had to roll the rear fenders. May need a bit more rolling.

Thanks. I wanted to keep a significant sidewall to keep with the character of the car. 17" was the right compromise for me between looks and performance.
The e39 wheels have a 74mm hub bore and 5x120 pattern making them an easy swap.

Successful in the modification of the front center caps. I had to cut some of the inner structure and drill a hole in the center because it was the low point of the center cap.
