Default Do it!

The 700R4 is a great trans. The lower 1st gear and taller 4th gear & lockup converter will transform the car. It will leap off the line and silently cruise at low RPM on the highway with great economy. You probably have a 3:31 rear end which is perfect for a 700R4. If you have a TH350 now you will need a shorter drive shaft by about 2 inches. You may be able to get away by using a shorter yolk. You will also need a linkage to run the 700R4's TV cable. You should get the right TV cable bracket for your application because proper TV cable travel is essential for the proper operation of the 700R4. If you've having the 700R4 built have them install a Z pack & 2nd gear corvette servo. Only use the 2nd gen 700r4 from 1988 on. They are much better transmissions and have an auxiliary valve body that provides soft reverse & drive engagement. The TH350 and early TH700R4 tend to bang or clunk on engagement after they are rebuilt. Consider a Transgo shift kit only if you planning on serious power plant upgrades.

The 700R4 does need electronic control for lock it up in 4th gear to keep the revs down and keep the trans fluid cool when cruising. There are kits to do this from Summit Racing with some basic level of automation.

If you want to go crazy install TPI fuel injection on that 305 and have the stock ECU control the trans. When the ECU controls the trans it does it way better. With an ECU it lock up in 3rd and 4rth gear more intelligently based on speed and load value. With TPI and a decent cam on that 305 you'll have a 250HP Jag with great drivability.

Default BowTie Overdrives - quality place

Since you live in So Cal, they are the place to get the trans and the proper TV cable stuff. Call them in Hesperia and get a well done
OD trans of your choice. They will do the install or sell it to you for your install and give you the proper advice.

I have their 200R in my 1971 XJ with a 383 and it works perfectly. I had another Jag, '72 with LT1/700R that was also a fun car...I just like the 200R better.

The loss of RPM from 1-2 shift is less and the OD is better for the highway. Same needs for the TV cable

Contact me to see either trans in a car, I live nearby! mabryroger@hotmail.com
