Jag has been garage stored.... 5 years now with fuel in the tank. Need advice from the forum... I've been told to pull the gas tank and replace. Is there an easy way can the fuel be siphoned out... How much is involved for a simple fix to get this puppy running?

 

Rusty tanks are common when a car is stored and these cars seem especially prone to it.

The tanks have drains at the bottom. Break away the plastic caps (or remove the valence panels) for access.

I'd drain the fuel and see what it looks like and go from there.

After you get it running you can tackle the brake system...which is probably full of rust as well.

Is it an XJ-S, or XJ12 Sedan?????.

The XJ-S has one tank in the boot, with a small "sump tank" below the battery, which has a drain plug in the bottom, with acces via a rubber plug in the boot (trunk) floor. I would syphon what you can via the filler spout, and drain the rest via the drain plug, which in my opinion would be less messy than trying to do all teh fuel via the drain plug.

The XJ12 Sedan has 2 tanks, one in each rear wing aperture, and they have drain plugs on the bottom as Doug said.

IF you have the XJ-S version, then someone higher up will possibly move this to the XJ-S section, and of course if it is the Sedan version it will stay here. Your call.

Either way, some fresh fuel, and new filter, and "flush" the new fuel all the way to the front, will make restarting much more successful.
