1985 XJ6 Won't Start
Hoping someone can help me with my Jag that won't start. It had been sitting for about 2 years. I drained the old gas, replaced the fuel filter.
purged the gas line up to the rail to get the old gas out.
Replaced plugs
Replaced fuel pump. I am getting elecricity to the pump.
Replaced Diode on firewall the send info to fuel pump.
I can get it started by spraying into the Air Mass Chemtool. But it wont run long.
Thinking it might be a vaccum problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ken

Hi, Third floor, I had a similar problem once. Three things come to mind to check: -
1. Are fuel injectors firing OK ? There should be an audible click as they fire, but there is a little light bulb assembly used by fuel injection specialists to check the injector pulse is OK, and these can be purchased. This device plugs into the end of the plug that attaches to the injector, (I have one in my toolbox). It will show whether the ECU is sending pulses to the injectors. Note that they all fire together on a Series 3. Also check all the earth, (ground), connections, there is one where several are bolted onto the inlet manifold. Remove and clean up, then bolt securely and make sure the thread doesn't strip in the aluminium of the manifold
2. Have you got a decent spark ? The ignition system should produce a spark that will jump over 1/4 inch in open air. Of course the plug gap is a lot less, but compression effectively increases this and if the spark is poor it will not jump the gap.
3. Does the fuel pump actually start and run ? You will need to listen in the boot (trunk) with the spare wheel out and the cover off.
As you can't get the engine to keep running, it will be best if you can persuade a friend to sit in the driving seat, and attempt to start the car, whilst you go around and make the checks.
