1986 Jag XJ6
started up for spring, and trans fluid showed completely empty on dipstick after starting, running through gears, etc. I suspected it would be low because there was a small puddle on the tarp we park it on for winter. Moved car to 4 different locations (hard to find a level spot on our farm) and 4 checks showed nothing on the tip of the dipstick. Since it holds 8 quarts, I figured adding 2 quarts to start would be "safe." You guessed it - now it shows OVER MAX on the dipstick for both cold and hot check (have not driven it more than up and down the driveway). Are we in danger of damaging anything if it actually has too much trans fluid? Help!!
overfiling the transmission may cause the fluid to foam (like in an engine when the crack is hitting the oil in the sump) and may cause erratic gear shifts.
A turkey baster and some tubing should be able to pull out a little to get you to a safe level
